The Water Dragon
by Amiri
My animal is a water dragon. A water dragon is a reptile because it hatches from an egg and it has scales and it doesn’t need it mother’s help.
As you can see a water dragon is green. A full grown water dragon weighs only 1 kilogram, and its length is zero point nine meters long! A water dragons height is about 5 inches long. It also has a third eye for sensing when it is day or night.
Crickets, mealworms and worms are perfect for a water dragon to eat. Little pieces of fruit and veggies will make a water dragon big and strong. Any insect or small fish will do just fine.
The Chinese water dragon is found in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Burma, and in southern China.
During the mating season males have a bright red mark on their chest. It is common for a male water dragon to have significantly large injuries. Once the male is found, he mates with all the females in his territory. After mating the female digs a hole in the soft sand near the riverbank where she lays fifteen to twenty five eggs. Then she abandons the eggs. Depending on the temperature they can that up to three months to hatch are mini replicas of their parents and are totally independent from birth.
I think water dragons should be kept in captivity because water dragons habitat is being destroyed by us humans. So we should at least do something nice to it. Even though water dragons are not endangered it’s habitat is being destroyed.
Amiri, you have written a very informative report on water dragons - I learnt a lot from reading it, well done. You did some excellent research and did a great job of finding pictures that supported your paragraphs too. A writing goal for next time could be to use the teacher models more as a guide for your own writing. This would help you include more detailed information, for example adding more description to your appearance paragraph (e.g. claws, number of feet, scales etc) and to your habitat paragraph (you told us which countries water dragons are found in but not what their actual habitat is like e.g. is it sandy, icy, near water, rocky, the jungle etc?).
ReplyDeleteHi Amiri.I didn't know they were 5 inches tall and great story.
ReplyDeleteHi Harry you did an awesome job on your animal report. I now am more interested in your animal.

Hi Amiri,
ReplyDeleteI am your grandmother so grandmothers are SUPPOSED to love their grandson's work, right? But I am pretending I am "Jeanne" which is my first name, and as a completely disinterested person off the street, I am totally impressed with your report on water dragons. I didn't know reptiles had a third eye! And I agree that we need to keep water dragons in safe habitats so they can survive, and we need to protect their ecosystems.
Amiri you have done a wonderful job on your report I didn't know that the water dragon had a third eye. Nice choice of you Animal.
